Shine a light

All of our classrooms have what they call a ‘focal area’, a little space with some holy images to which the class turns to say their prayers. Most if not all have candles – battery-powered candles. You press the button and the light comes on, unless the battery is exhausted, or the bulb has gone.

Please! Let us take a well-managed risk. Let us take all due precautions against damage to child or building. And let us honour Our Lord and our class saints with a living flame.

In France you sometimes get a battery-powered sanctuary light, when one elderly French priest has to look after several churches. But in my school there are plenty of children who would like nothing better than to light and later extinguish the flame. We all need and love symbols and rituals, we all need to learn and practise the language of the heart.
